Prof. Dr.med.vet. Johann Lang, organizing committee
On the 12th and 13th of May, the third European Veterinary MRI-User Meeting took place in Berne/Switzerland. Exactly 99 delegates from 18 European countries and the United States attended to the event. The lectures were given by twelve speakers from industry, universities and private veterinary hospitals, all of them with excellent international reputation. Saturday morning was dedicated to basic physics of gradient echo techniques. During the lunch break the participants had time for discussions, to eat a sandwich, to meet old friends and to make new ones. The program of the afternoon was quite intense but nonetheless very interesting. Two radiologist working in human medicine and MRI specialists talked about the clinical applications of gradient echo techniques, followed by two speakers pointing out the clinical applications for high and low field MRI in the veterinary field. Then the lectures went seamlessly to the other main topic of this MRI User Meeting: The neurocranium. Techniques and protocols in small animals and in horses, as well as various diseases such as brain hemorrhage and vascular disorders, metabolic, toxic, neoplastic and inflammatory diseases were discussed. Their heads filled with all this information, the participants went to enjoy the evening in the beautiful city of Berne. Luckily the weather was wonderful and our guests got to see the best side of Berne. Meanwhile the speakers were invited to a special dinner. On Sunday morning everyone gathered again in the technically very well equipped lecture hall. Experts from Berne and Ghent compared the possibilities of CT to MRI in brain disorders and trauma. The morning session was completed by a lecture concerning congenital and developmental disorders. After a twenty minute break where the delegates could get caffeine, glucose and fresh air, the small animal and horse wet labs were introduced. Under the guidance of experts and in six groups of 10-15 persons interesting cases were worked out. According to the main topic, the majority of the delegates chose to work on small animal cases. Afterwards, in a last panel session the delegates had the opportunity to discuss the cases and any other question they had with the MRI experts. The very lively and interesting discussions continued throughout the aperitif witch concluded this years Veterinary MRI User Meeting.
